Digital eye fatigue and how to fight it
The digital revolution and the evolution of the eyes
We are spending more and more time staring at displays of all kinds. The smartphone accompanies us from morning to evening, at work we often use the computer, and in the evening we bush on the web or sit down to watch more episodes of our favorite series. There's no denying it - in the last twenty we've experienced a real digital revolution. According to research, we spend an average of 8-10 hours looking at displays and screens. Here's the problem - our lifestyles are changing faster than our bodies, especially our eyes. The stresses to which they are subjected have increased incredibly rapidly, and this is not without consequences. Our eyes, subjected to constant bombardment, are growing tired.
Symptoms of digital eye strain (DES)
For centuries, our ancestors looked mostly into the distance, on the lookout for prey or imminent danger. It was crucial for the survival of our species. However, this has now changed dramatically. We spend more and more time in enclosed, relatively small spaces, sitting in front of a monitor at work, or tV at home, or just looking at your smartphone. As a result, sooner or later our eyesight gets tired, leading to unpleasant symptoms.
Among the most common ailments caused by eye fatigue can include:
- headaches,
- general exhaustion,
- eye pain or burning sensation,
- hazy vision,
- hypersensitivity to light,
- dry eyes,
- worse night vision,
- reduced concentration.
As we can see, the problem can become serious, because it not only affects the organ itself, which is the eye, but also affects the our entire functioning.
Why using screens tires our eyes?
There are several reasons for this, firstly our eyes are definitely better at handling reflected light. Meanwhile, displays literally display, that is, emit light that hits us. That's why it's better for our eyes to watch a movie in a theater or on a home projector than on a TV screen. Moreover - the screens of our devices force us to focus our eyes on a relatively small part of our field of vision. Even sizable TVs occupy only a small slice of it
. What's more, the environment also has an impact on how tired our eyes will get. According to statistics, we mostly watch TV or browse the Internet (or play games) in the evening, or even at night. If we do not have additional lighting in the environment, our eyes are exposed to a very high intensity light emitter that is very cut off from the surroundings. Our eye is literally bombarded with photons. In addition, the speed of the projected image makes us blink less often, so our eye is more dried out, further exacerbating eye fatigue.
What we can do about it?
The solution in this situation is simple. Just quit using smartphones, using computers, or watching TV. However, it is easier said than done. These devices have become an integral part of our lifestyle. Therefore, it is worth taking care of the hygiene of their use. In addition to this, it is worth creating optimal conditions for the use of electronic devices, for example, by appropriate lighting. And here comes the question of backlighting for the TV.
Backlights, especially those that dynamically adjust the displayed colors to what is currently displayed on the screen. As proven by a study conducted at Eindhoven University of Technology, such backlighting makes our eyes fatigue much slower than without it. Such backlights enlarge the field of vision, provide additional illumination and, moreover, their light reaches us as reflected light, this has a positive effect on our eyes.
